- Using 150 to 200 words, please state your reasons for running for office. What compels you to take on this responsibility?
I have become frustrated the last few years watching our government leadership pass laws that they have not read, studied or tested, primarily in the tax area. Under the guise of "tax reform," Utah citizens are now saddled with a tax code that is NOT fair, NOT equitable, and definitely NOT simple (the three adjectives used by the governor in announcing this reform – notice he no longer uses the term "simple"). Low-income citizens, senior citizens, the disabled, and others who do not "have a voice" have suffered because of the way the tax laws were changed. Someone needs to step up and stand up for these groups. We are giving away our wealth to entice others to move here; but we are treating our citizens who are already here as if they don't count. It's time to stop this stealing from the poor to give to the rich.
- What do you consider to be the top three issues currently facing Utah? Please list them in order of priority to you (with #1 the most important) and explain why they are important to you and to Utah.
My priorities are: 1) True tax reform; 2) Transportation issues; and 3) Ethics in government.
- What do you plan to do to address your top three issues?
I will sponsor and support legislation that restores equity to our tax laws, preserves and protects the rights of individuals to life, liberty and property, and restore integrity to the legislative process through transparency in campaign financing, reporting, and lobbying.
- What are your most important accomplishments that would make you the most qualified candidate for office?
I have a connection with the constituents in my district. I will listen, return phone calls and emails, and discuss issues that are of utmost interest to our district. I will represent the three wonderful cities which are found in this district by meeting and cooperating with the city leaders to achieve common goals, instead of working independent of them.
- What skills, talents, and strengths do you have that enhance your ability to be an effective office holder?
I would represent the district with complete integrity. I would open my campaign records to my constituents, even though not required by law. I will speak boldly for what is right, even against power brokers and special interests. I would seek to be a leader, not a follower.
- Why do you belong to your political party?
I believe in the principles of the Republican party, although individual members of my party sometimes can cause me to think they don't understand these same principles. I believe in limited government (which is not supported by the budget increases of the last few years). I believe in individual responsibility (not the welfare efforts of "cradle to grave" care). And I believe together and individually we will be held accountable for our actions in relation to the government we elect and the laws we support.
