- Using 150 to 200 words, please state your reasons for running for office. What compels you to take on this responsibility?
I feel a responsibility toward my family, community, church, and country. If people with firm and unshakable principles don't do their part in supporting proper Constitutional government, then either anarchy or run-away out of control mob rule will result. We are far down the road toward bloated favoritism and out of balance controls of our 3 branches of government.
- What do you consider to be the top three issues currently facing Utah? Please list them in order of priority to you (with #1 the most important) and explain why they are important to you and to Utah.
(1) We have lost the majority of what should be State land in Utah, and are well on the way toward losing control of the remainder. We are facing a judicial “lock” on our Environment that would have us return to the “hunter – gatherer” lifestyle of previous centuries. (2) Related to the land possession is the lock on our resources. There needs to be incentive and freedom to open our rich resources to relieve the energy crisis that has been forced upon us by shortcited or malicious actions of the past. (3) Our educational system is under attack by persons and organizations that would control us from a federal level, and stamp all of our children with the same mediocre level of learning. We need to bring control back to the family and local area. It would be good to eliminate the federal Dept. of Education and the glutted spending that goes with it.
- What do you plan to do to address your top three issues?
My measuring stick for any action, whether individual or legislative is to move from government control toward individual responsibility and encouragement of free enterprise. I would support private initiative as opposed to bureaucratic expansion (and that would apply when looking at health care as well as other issues). I would try to move away from favoritism & waste as well as run-away spending, toward the principles of volunteerism and the right to own and use property.
- What are your most important accomplishments that would make you the most qualified candidate for office?
I have been a student of Constitutional Government since taking seriously the Scout Oath when I was a young man. I am serious about doing my “best to do my duty to God and my country...” I attended the Foundation for Economic Education seminars and have been involved as a delegate to my party conventions for many years. I need now to put principles into action for the benefit of my family and community.
- What skills, talents, and strengths do you have that enhance your ability to be an effective office holder?
What can I say? I am definitly old enough to have picked up some wisdom. Now I need to see if it can be put to practical use. I have been an effective and persuasive teacher for several decades. Maybe that will help too.
- Why do you belong to your political party?
I would like to see my party be even stronger on reverence for life (we have killed about 2000 babies for every single serviceman lost in Iraq ). The Republicans stand opposed to senseless abortion. I see more respect for the family in my party and would like to see even stronger support for defining a traditional family as having a married father and mother. I see the Republican traditional view as supporting limited government and less tax rather than piling government program upon program to cure all the ills of the world by unlimited spending. I want to do my part in reversing the runaway spending trend, and return responsibility to the ordinary citizen.
